Tax-Free Childcare Calculator 2026 : See What You’d Get

tax-free childcare calculator

If you’re trying to work out how much you’d actually get from Tax-Free Childcare, you probably don’t want to wade through pages of guidance first. You just want the number. This tax-free childcare calculator does that in a few seconds: put in your childcare bill, and it shows what you’d pay and what the government would add on top.

Below the calculator, we’ve explained how the sums work, the limits that catch people out, and what the figure doesn’t include, so you know exactly where you stand.

Work out your tax-free childcare top-up

Tax-Free Childcare Calculator

Enter your childcare bill to see what you would pay and what the government adds.

£
You pay £0.00
Government adds £0.00
Total to your provider £0.00

This is a guide only, based on the standard scheme rules (for every £8 you pay in, the government adds £2, up to the quarterly cap). Check your eligibility and current limits on the official government childcare service.

Enter your childcare bill, choose whether you’re looking at a month, a quarter or a full year, and tick the box if your child qualifies as a disabled child (the limits are higher). The results update instantly.

How the calculation works

The scheme is simpler than the paperwork makes it look. For every £8 you pay into your childcare account, the government adds £2.

Put another way: you cover 80% of the bill, and the government covers 20%, up to a limit. The money goes into an online account in your name, and you pay your provider from that account. You’re not reimbursed later, and you don’t claim it back on a tax return; the top-up simply lands in the account, usually within seconds of your payment.

So a £500 bill means you pay £400, the government adds £100, and your provider receives the full £500.

What the numbers look like in practice

If you’d rather see it at a glance than use the calculator, here’s how it works out at common amounts:

Your childcare billYou payGovernment adds
£250£200£50
£500£400£100
£750£600£150
£1,000£800£200
£1,250£1,000£250

Those figures assume you’re within the quarterly limit, which is where the next section comes in.

The limits you need to know about

This is the part that surprises people. The government top-up is capped, so above a certain bill you stop getting the full 20%.

  • The maximum top-up is normally £500 every three months per eligible child, which works out at £2,000 a year.
  • For an eligible disabled child, the maximum rises to £1,000 every three months, or £4,000 a year.

In practical terms, once your childcare costs go beyond roughly £2,500 a quarter for one child, the extra isn’t topped up; you pay it in full. The calculator flags this automatically when your figure goes over the cap, so you’re not left with a misleading number.

It’s also worth knowing the cap resets each quarter, so a quiet term followed by an expensive one doesn’t let you carry unused allowance forward.

Working it out yourself in ten seconds

If you just want a rough figure without any tool at all:

  1. Take your childcare bill.
  2. Multiply by 0.8 — that’s your share.
  3. Multiply by 0.2 — that’s the government’s share.

So £600 × 0.8 = £480 from you, and £600 × 0.2 = £120 from the government. Then check the £500-per-quarter cap hasn’t been passed.

What the calculator doesn’t tell you

A calculator gives you the maths, not the eligibility. Before you count on the money, there are a few things to confirm:

Whether you qualify. The scheme is aimed at working parents earning above a minimum threshold but below an upper income limit, with rules covering self-employment, parental leave and caring responsibilities. Check your position on the official government childcare service.

Whether your provider is signed up. Being registered isn’t the same as being part of the scheme. Always confirm before paying a deposit.

What you can’t combine it with. Tax-Free Childcare can’t be used alongside employer childcare vouchers, and there are rules about how it interacts with other support. You can usually use it alongside funded hours, which is how a lot of families cover the gaps. Our guide to free childcare for working parents explains how those hours work, and our post on who is eligible for Tax-Free Childcare goes through the criteria in detail.

That you have to reconfirm. Every three months you need to confirm your details, or the funding stops. It takes a couple of minutes, but plenty of families get caught out by it.

Frequently asked questions

How much can I get from Tax-Free Childcare?

For every £8 you pay into your childcare account, the government adds £2, which is 20% of your childcare costs. The top-up is capped at £500 every three months per child (£2,000 a year), rising to £1,000 a quarter (£4,000 a year) for an eligible disabled child.

How does the tax-free childcare calculator work?

It applies the standard scheme split. You enter your childcare bill and it works out your 80% share, the government’s 20% top-up, and flags when your costs exceed the quarterly cap so the figure stays realistic.

Is Tax-Free Childcare worth it?

For most eligible working families, yes. A £500 monthly childcare bill means £100 a month from the government, which is £1,200 a year you wouldn’t otherwise have. The main things to check are that you qualify and that your provider accepts the scheme.

Can I use tax-free childcare with free hours?

In many cases, yes. Families often use funded hours for core sessions and a tax-free childcare account for additional time, such as wraparound care or extra days. You can’t use it alongside employer childcare vouchers.

What happens if my childcare costs more than the cap?

You simply pay the excess yourself. The government tops up 20% only until you reach the quarterly maximum for that child, after which any further payments come entirely from you.

Does the calculator confirm I’m eligible?

No. It shows what the top-up would be based on the scheme’s standard rules, but it can’t check your circumstances. Confirm your eligibility on the official government childcare service before relying on the figures.
